Circles may looked similar in their physical feature. But, each of them is different, from the colors and their combination to the strokes of the brush.

Each of them has its own distinguished character. Thus, giving the same value to each of them is to respect its individuality.

A circle is to embrace, rather than to enclose.

Becoming A Painter

I was an accomplished textile artist, a weaver, for about 20 years. But, in the later years of that period, I often got frustrated for not being able to express myself, to release my inner creative energy spontaneously, and in the end, I even felt depressed.

One afternoon, in the spring of 2015, after ended myself as a textile artist for a couple of years, I felt an urge to paint. So I rushed to get some basic painting supplies, canvas, paint, brushes and an easel, and rushed back, started to paint.

I have been enjoyed painting very much since then, for its spontaneity and for its easy expressiveness!

In terms of the image of my painting, I like the simplicity which, not only presented on the colors I used, but also the images I created.

All my paintings are the presentation of my mind, a mind of calmness. In a state of calmness, one would be able to see the truth around him/her easily. On the other hand, even a very simple truth, one would not be able to see it. I would like to share this calmness with the rest of the world.

The Circle Theory

A circle is an abstract symbol, which exemplifies the world around us and beyond, and which conveys our way of thinking in many aspects.

To draw a circle is to pursue perfection and, to reach completion profoundly.

A story behind of this new series:

In the autumn of 2019 when I was in Paris, one afternoon while I was having a lunch at the cafe inside of the Louis Vuitton Foundation, sitting next to my table was an old gentleman from Australia. After we exchanged a few words, he asked me “What brought you here?”, I told him that I am an artist, I paint. Then he asked me if I could show him some of my works, I said “of course”. I have some images of my painting stored in my cell phone, so I shown them to the old gentleman. He looked at my paintings, then said to me: “ They very much tell where the culture you are from.” His words expressed what his impression on my paintings, but to me, the words struck me with a hint of a certain limitation of my works. Quite contrary, I always thought that my works are quite universal! During my stay in Paris, the words from that old gentleman kept hovering over my head, and near the end of my stay, I said to myself that I need to make a change!

So this series of “ The Circle Theory” is another new start on my journey to pursue art.

As a matter of fact, several years ago, even before I started to paint, I had practiced on drawing circles, using ink on rice paper. Since this year, I have switched to oil paint on canvas, and this new series is a continuation on my fascination for circles.

Notes on Drawing Circles

The image of circles is one of the critical elements in my painting. Why circles? Here are some of the notes I recorded during my practice of drawing circles:

01/21/17 *** is a circle a symbol of unity, a desire of perfection, a mark of a life, a sign of completion?

09/16/16 *** a circle is a unit combined with the elements to form a life, from the invisible cells to the unreachable universe.

01/26/16 *** no matter how small, how tiny a circle is, no matter how imperfect, how rugged a circle shaped, when both ends meet, it reaches its destination.

07/19/15 *** no circle ends exact the same shape, just like any living beings in the world, they are all individually shaped and that's the beauty of it!

07/09/15 *** to draw a circle, a different way to start, to progress, to turn, to finish, all effects the shape, the lines and the final image of a circle.

05/06/15 *** when drawing a circle, one needs to be in a state of calmness, holding a brush firmly but in a relaxed way, without rushing to move the brush.
